On the face of it Korach seems to have a valid complaint. The truth is that it breaks down when we really look at it. This is the very common among those who seek power for the sake of power. They use democracy to bring their dictatorship.

Korach led a rebellion against Moses based on “equality”. Why should Moses be the leader over all of the Jews? Aren’t we all equal? The answer is that Moses became Moses because he worked on himself. He was not born into leadership. He earned it.

In this week’s portion we watch as Moses chooses the wrong people to scout out the Land. The problem with the men chosen was that they had a vested interest in staying in the wilderness. That they did not want to lose their position of leadership. Sometimes a leader has to recognize when it is time to leave.
פרשת בהעלותך / ט”ו בסיון תשפ”ב
This week’s portion leads with the commandment to Aaron, the High Priest, to clean & prepare the Menorah. Why does he have to do this? Can’t he delegate this job to an underling? The answer is that to the Torah leadership means to lead by example. Sometimes you have to do the dirty work yourself.

The Torah starts the portion by detailing the physical & moral attributes of what we expect of the Priests. It ends with an admonition against desecrating God’s name. It is important to remember that when someone identifies as a religious person he represents God. His behavior is a reflection of God.

Why does the priest in the Temple have to be in perfect physical shape? He represents God to the people and the people to God.

The Torah warns that if our society is immoral then the leaders will be immoral. An immoral leader is symptom of a bad society.

The Torah commands that the king read the Book of Deuteronomy to the people once every seven years. This is more for the king than the people. It is to teach him that even he has to obey the Torah.
